Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
Web Accessibility for those with Disabilities
Web accessibility means that websites, tools, and technologies are designed and developed so that people with disabilities can use them to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web and contribute to the Web. Web accessibility encompasses all disabilities that affect access to the Web, including: auditory, cognitive, neurological, physical, speech and visual.
MD6 Web Accessibility Project
As "Vision" is one of the main tenets of Lions International, all Colorado Lions websites should be accessible by those with vision impairments. This project is to upgrade MD6 Colorado Lions websites at the State, District and Club levels to meet the minimum standards of the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) technical specifications, guidelines and techniques. These are considered international standards for web accessibility.
Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (WAVE)
Evaluation tools help website authors make their web content more accessible to individuals with disabilities. They can identify many accessibility and Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG) errors and also facilitate human evaluation of web content. WAVE is a University of Utah supported tool for evaluation of websites. Here is the WAVE Introductory Video.
To use the Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (WAVE) to evaluate a web page:
Open the WAVE evaluation tool in your browser.
Enter the web page address you wish to evaluate.
Review the errors, contrast errors and alerts for possible correction.
Creating Accessible PDF Documents
Often, PDF files are available to view and download from websites. Like web pages, these documents should be accessible to those with disabilities.
Microsoft Word
The first step in creating an accessible PDF is to ensure that the original document is accessible. The following are guidelines to create an accessible Word document and convert it to a PDF accessible document.
Microsoft Publisher
Here are Guidelines to create an accessible Publisher document and convert it to a PDF accessible document.
